I learned how to play mahjong with my preschool mom friends after seeing that final scene in Crazy Rich Asians with Rachel and her boyfriend's mom, Eleanor, in the mahjong parlor. Fast forward 8 years, and our Wednesday afternoon group is still going, despite many of us having kids at different schools and some of us returning back to work. It is a highlight of my week when I can pop by and catch up with good friends.
I started teaching mahjong during COVID summer when we were out in Newport Beach, CA with my father-in-law, who is handicapped and was very hesitant to go out to public places. I taught my husband and my brother-in-law how to play, and we played mahjong every evening after putting my kids to bed. It made me realize how amazing mahjong is for building connection and community.
I initially learned how to play mahjong through an instructor over several lessons. I have created my own unique way to teach the game in one hour! I love teaching and helping people create their own community and connection points in this fast-paced world. I have taught kids, couples, and numerous groups of people. I also organize mahjong tournaments and events for school fundraising, work team-building, and for the ultimate girl's night out!
